According to the sign, this is a magnetic naval mine. It certainly has no Hertz ‘horns’, the protuberances normally seen on contact mines erected around the coastline as memorials or donation boxes. These mines had an internal induction coil, which could detect the magnetic field of a ship, and thus complete a connection and detonate. I have tentatively identified it as an ‘M’ Mark I mine based on the circumference (40”) and fittings, although many British naval mines of the Second World War used the same parts. If anyone knows otherwise please let me know.

This mine is at the picnic site at South Landing, near Flamborough Head, on the East Yorkshire coast. 121 images taken on a Huawei P30 in February 2020.
