More model informationBuckhorn and Alpaco are Ferris-type wooden cargo vessels built for the United States Shipping Board as part of the massive World War I shipbuilding effort. Like many of the shipwrecks within Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary, both of these vessels were brought to their current location in the 1920s for salvage. Buckhorn and Alpaco are resting on their keels (bottom) and their hulls (frame) are well preserved. The ships have light plant growth and a colony of freshwater clams is located within the Buckhorn’s aft peak bulkhead (an upright wall at the back of the ship). Model by Ian Dunshee/NOAA.
