Test Pit 5, dug in the south-west corner of the Bouskell Park in Blaby on June 2021.
This 1m sq pit was dug down through 0.2m of topsoil, 0.1m of soil and cobbles (possibly a surface) and 0.2m of subsoil and stones, reaching a possible wall at the bottom of the pit. The topsoil produced a few red brick fragments, a possible iron nail and a small number of clay tobacco pipe stems as well as pottery of medieval, post-medieval and modern date. The upper surface and underlying subsoil both produced a small assemblage of pottery of 12th-14th century date.
LiDAR, geophysical survey and previous archaeological observations all suggest that this corner of the park is an area of medieval activity. Pottery from the surface corroborates this and suggests a date of the 13th century. The absence of late medieval pottery suggests activity had ceased by the 15th century. Model generated using SfM photogrammetry.
