More model informationBust of Serbian General Stevan Knićanin on the grounds of the Heldenberg Memorial. Knićanin (1809-1855) placed himself at the head of a military volunteer unit of 3,000 men in 1848 to come to the aid of the Austrian Serbs against the rebellious Hungarians. He was appointed national colonel, but had to retreat across the Tisza before the Hungarians. On the orders of his government he returned home in 1849, became a senator, in 1854 minister of war and advisor to Prince Alexander I. For his services in the fight against the revolution in Hungary he became a knight of the Order of Maria Theresa.
