More model informationOverview of the main Butrint complex in southern Albania.
Butrint was established by the Greek Chaonian tribe, and was a strategic port throughout Hellenistic and Roman times. In the first century BCE it became a Roman colony, and remained an important centre into thesixth century CE. It was subsequently ruled by the Byzantines and Venetians, before being finally abandoned in the middle ages.
The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, and the Butrint National Archaeological Park was created in 2000.
