Die Burg wurde um das Jahr 1330 durch die Grafen von Tierstein erbaut. Ab 1461 benutzte die Stadt Basel die Anlage als Landvogtei. In den Wirren nach der französischen Revolution wurde die bereits geräumte Burg in der Nacht vom 21. auf den 22. Januar 1798 von der aufgebrachten Landbevölkerung ausgeraubt und in Brand gesteckt. Danach diente die Ruine als Steinbruch und gelangte 1864 in Privatbesitz.
