Remains of the burial chamber of Cairn F in Carrowkeel Megalithic Cemetery, Castlebaldwin, Co. Sligo, Ireland.
Cairn F was the largest cairn at carrowkeel, it was particularly unusual as it had a 1.5 metre high standing stone (non-structural) within it. The passage was about 8 metres long and the capstone over the chamber was though to enclose a space upto 5 metres high!. The cairn was rapidly excavated in 1911, since then collapsing cairn material has refilled the chambers. The enormous 2.9 metre capstone was estimated to wieigh 4 tonnes, it was impossible to move so the excavators broke it up into more managable pieces.
