Cairnhead Mulberry Harbour Beetle

A concrete pontoon - codenamed ‘Beetle’ - that was part of the experimental prototype Mulberry Harbours that were built and tested at Cairnhead Bay and other sites on the Solway Coast during the D-Day preparations. These ‘Beetles’ supported the floating roadway of the portable Mulberry Harbours that played an important role in the Normandy beach landings. This design for the harbours was selected based on the sea trials here and this is a rare survivng example.
