L’area delle Vena del gesso si trova ad emergere dal mare nella metà del Pleistocene, circa 0,8 milioni di anni fa. A cominciaria da questo momento si innesca il processo di modellamento della sua superfice. Gli eventi meteorici asportano quindi ‘rapidamente’ un sottile strato non carsificabile che sovrasta la serie gessosa e rapidamente innescano i primi fenomeno di paleo - carsismo sulla dorsale. Recenti datazioni eseguite su frammenti di speleotemi tramite la tecnica dell’uranio-torio, hanno permesso la datazione di questi primi fenomeni come antecedenti a 600,000 anni fa. Questi speleotemi testimoniano però l’esistenza di grotte e sistemi carsici attualmente completamente scomparsi. Totalmente smantellati dall’erosione naturale. I frammenti, sparsi ovunque nell’area di Monte Mauro, sono quanto resta di questo antico reticolo, nonché importantissime tetimonianze del paleo-clima. In alcuni casi alcuni frammenti, sono ancora visibili in sito, sulle pareti della Vena. http://www.venadelgesso.it/mm/10.pdf
