More model informationThis cannonball was discovered in a pit dug c.1820-1830. It may have been a privy pit which was later used as a rubbish pit, or was filled with rubbish when it went out of use. Objects found in the pit include charcoal, probably from kitchen fires, and earthenware ceramics, again from the kitchens. The cannonball may have been part of the early defences of first Government House. An early depiction of the house c.1789-1792 shows two cannons in the front walled yard of the house and two piles of cannonballs at the gates.
