The former Baltimore Traction Company powerhouse is located at 1142 East Pratt Street. This Romanesque Revival building was built in 1890 and spans an entire city block. The car barn has two decorative facades with step parapets, pediments, and stone finials. Although the original door was replaced with a modern garage bay, the arch remains.
A few years later, the dominance of electric streetcars as the main public transportation system rendered the cable traction facility obsolete. Throughout the 20th century, this building served as storage and repair facilities for Baltimore’s Department of Public Works.
Presently, Cross St Partners and Beatty Development Group plan to preserve and renovate for potential commercial uses. Construction is slatted for later this year. This historic redevelopment could be a positive investment in the Jonestown neighborhood.
