Carrowntemple Graveyard, County Sligo, Ireland.
No. 8. Rectangular Fret.
Fourteen early Christian grave slabs have been found around the ruined remains of the medieval church of Kilfree, the majority were Cross Slabs and others had different patterns. Stylistically they date to 7th-8th century. The may have been a small monastery of some importance here producing these carved stones. In the mid-1980s some of the slabs disappeared from the site and were recovered a couple of years later. Replica castings in reinforced concrete were produced of twelve of the slabs, Six slabs then went to the National Museum of Ireland and the remainder are in the care of Sligo County Council.
All my 3D models of Carrowntemple are of the replica slabs.
