Cartonkeel - Sheela-na-Gig - WM030-1120013D ModelNoAI
Incorporated into wall of outbuilding located in farmyard immediately E of Moate Castle. The carving is situated above a pointed doorway which has been rebuilt into an 18th /19th century outbuilding. The doorway and sheela-na-gig may have come from the adjacent Castle. The carving is set into an oval depression. It has an oversized head, oval eyes, a triangular nose descending from a Y shaped brow. It appears there is a design on the forehead, but unclear if this is tooling or a headdress. Two large circular cheeks define the face. The Lips are enlarged, and mouth open. The top row of teeth are visible and tongue protruding. The head blends into the body. The breasts are small and the belly distended. The arms extend from below the head to over the waist where they are holding the vulva open. Fingers can be seen on the hand. The legs run under the arms and behind the head. A belt appears to run across the body over the left breast and under the right. A belly button can be seen below this.
