More model informationThis is one of the finest carved stone objects known from the ancient Maya civilization. It looks like a gourd vessel, but it was actually made from a single block of dense calcite. The style of the glyphs and images suggests that it was made around 400 C.E. You can learn more about this vessel here: http://museum.doaks.org/Obj22807?sid=61124&x=117784&port=2661
The model was created from photos taken through the display case at the bowl’s current location in the Dumbarton Oaks gallery. It is a nice proof of concept that a visitor can easily collect digital ‘casts’ of objects on display.
