Elaboratly carved top portion of a khachkar or Armenian cross-stone (see model of bottom portion here: . These stones are memorials with carved designs that were common to Armenian medieval era art. These stone carvings are free-standing. This particular khachkar is called the Amenaprktich (the Saviour), and is at Haghpat Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Armenia. The piece is ornately carved on three sides with rich iconography and writing. These stones have been impacted by cultural vandalism and surface degradation and breakage and all khatchkars are considered as heritage at risk by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and in 2010, khachkars were inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
