Area 3 is located at the northeastern end of Cástulo’s plateau, close to the North Gate. This zone had a long history of occupation, starting in the eighth century BCE and continuing down to the fifth or sixth century CE. It was a residential area beginning in the Iberian period, as well as under the Romans, and it therefore serves as evidence for the process of cultural transformation known as Romanization. Area 3 is the first place at Cástulo where archaeologists have found evidence of the city’s Iberian period (ca. 700-200 BCE), a moment of extreme historical interest. From this period, we have found walls with stone socles and adobe or packed earth above, as well as various floors of beaten earth and flagstones at various levels showing development over time.
