The so-called “Centaur Borghese” is a Roman marble statue group depicting an ‘old’ centaur being tormented by an Eros perched on his back. Such a statue was likely accompanied by a pendant sculpture of a ‘young’ centaur, as depicted in the pair found at Hadrian’s Villa.
This example is now at the Louvre (inventory Ma 562 / MR 122 / # 305), and likely dates from the 2nd Century CE.
The plinth, base, and palm tree support, and lower parts of the centaur’s forelegs are all restorations made by N. Cordier in 1608.
