One of the oldest hospitals in the United States. Charity Hospital was shut down due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Shortly afterward, the Louisiana National Guard cleaned out and repaired the building to make it functional again. However, certain individuals in the management of the hospital did not want it reopened. Charity Hospital was then shuttered permanently, even though it had been brought up to a usable condition in a city that was suffering from a drastic lack of operating hospitals. A makeshift hospital was set up in an abandoned department store next to the Superdome. Charity Hospital of New Orleans has been closed ever since. Shortly afterward, LSU announced that they would be building a multi-billion dollar building on the other side of I-10.
