More model informationThe 199 ft Checotah (pronounced Che.co’.ta) was built in 1870 as the schooner Russell George. Like many of the early ships it was involved in several strandings and sinking events and was eventually rebuilt as a schooner barge and renamed the Checotah. In 1870 while in tow of the steamer Tempest it sank in a storm northeast of Port Sanilac. It lies about 800 ft from the wreck of the steamer New York in 117 ft of water. The hull is broken and flattened, but there are many artifacts and pieces of machinery on site. . The model was created from 2,016 30 megapixel RAW images shot from a DPV mounted camera on a 35 minute dive by Andrew Goodman.
