Cherub 18th–19th c. Unknown sculptor

Images of cherubim, those in the heavens above, are extremely ancient. The first mention of them in the Book of Exodus describes how God commanded Moses to adorn the lid of the Ark of the Covenant with two cherubim with raised wings. Cherubim are often used to fill empty spaces in iconostases and altars, decorate royal doors, and frame icons. The cherub from the Piddubne village is carved with a round face, a double chin, and plump cheeks. The soft lines of the face are rounded along the contour. The cherub’s image is characterised by a small snub nose, expressive, widely opened eyes, and large, well-defined lips. Rhythmically intertwined curls of hair frame the head. Two large raised wings are modelled with rows of parallel feathers, worked with deep carved lines.
