A chess pawn is one of the most basic and commonly seen pieces on a chessboard. Each player starts the game with eight pawns, positioned on the second row (rank) in front of their other pieces. Pawns are usually depicted as small, round-topped pieces with a flat bottom to stand on the chessboard.
