The Halsewell was an East Indiaman wrecked on the 6th January 1786, ten years before the Earl Of Abergavenny was launched. Like the Abergavenny, the Halsewell was wrecked in a storm off the Dorset coast, striking the rocks and sinking near Worth Matravers. Of two hundred and forty souls aboard only seventy four survived.
This chess piece, probably a pawn, is one of several in excellent condition on display at Portland Museum.
