La chiesa sorge sul luogo un tempo occupato da un oratorio presumibilmente benedettino; di questa fase resta il campanile romanico, risalente alla seconda metà del secolo XI. Dagli interventi strutturali effettuati dal 1479 al 1481 derivano le forme attuali dell’edificio di culto. Esso fu consacrato da S. Carlo nel 1570 ed eretto in parrocchiale nel 1575. Della prima metà del XVI secolo è la cappella di S. Giovanni Battista, sottoposta al patronato degli Annoni, dove S. Carlo, nella sua visita del 1571, vide l’Ancona della Passione eseguita da una bottega anversese verso la metà del XVI secolo (oggi al Museo Diocesano di Milano). L’altare, del 1829, è opera di Giuseppe Bovara.
