Chipped Stone Projectile Point (specimen #2332a70). The Brunk Site (31BN151). Buncombe County, North Carolina. Excavated in by David Moore Unit: 90R120, level: plowzone. Weight: 11.6 g. Length: 4.7 cm. Material: Stone.
Remarks: This stone projectile point was made by Native Americans. What most people call arrowheads, archaeologist call projectile points because often they were attached to spears or darts, not arrows. This point would have been too large to effectively use as an arrow point and most likely would have been a spear point. The term for making a chipped stone point is called “flintknapping,” whereby the “knapper” strikes one stone with another rock or other knapping tools made of antler or wood. This spearpoint probably dates to the Late Archaic period ca. 3000-1000 B.C.
