The nautilus is a relative of squid and octopi. These shelled cephalopods live in a spiral, chambered shell and are able to withdaw into it should they need to. As the organism grows, a new chamber is added to the shell for the nautilius to live in. Nautilius species first show up in the Triassic (~51 million years ago) and 6 species can still be found today in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
