ChM PV4279 - Thecachamsa carolinensis

A crocodile scute collected in the vicinity of Charleston, South Carolina. Scutes like this one are bones within the skin of crocdilians which act as an armor covering. This scute was found in association with a skull, axial skeleton, and limb elements. The skeleton this scute belongs to was designated as the holotype specimen for G. carolinensis. A cast of this specimen was assembled and can be found on exhibit in the Natural History Gallery along with some of the skeletal elements.

Synonym: Gavialosuchus carolinensis
