Pelagonis sandersi is the largest known bird capable of flight. This specimen was found at the Charleston International Airport in February 1983 by a volunteer for The Charleston Museum. P. sandersi was formally described in 2014* and named in honor of the Museum’s former curator. The original fossils are stored in a secure area in The Charleston Museum and include the skull seen in this scan as well as wing elements, ribs, and assorted fragmentary remains.
