Collected from Charleston Co., SC.
An Oligocene (approx. 26 - 28 mya) dugong skull collected from Charleston Co., South Carolina. Dugongs are relatives of the manatee. Like manatees, they posses very robust, heavy, skeletons that prevents them from easily floating to the water’s surface. This allows for manatees and dugongs to easily graze on plantlife in shallow waters.
