Cinchona is a small evergreen tree, native to the humid montane forests of the South American Andes. Quinine bark (Cinchona spp.) and Quinetum from Cinchona bark, are traditionally used to treat malaria. Quinine is extracted from the bark of several species of Cinchona. Alkaloids from the tree are also used to treat cardiac problems and sunburn.
