Clachtoll Broch, located on the north-west coast of Assynt, is one of northern Scotland’s most iconic archaeological monuments. The structure was destroyed by fire in antiquity causing the collapse of walls, internal wooden fixtures and the roof. Surving in places to first floor level- over 3m above the bedrock- the remains of this spectacular drystone tower are thought to be around 2000 years old.

Since 2007 AOC has worked with Historic Assynt to protect, study and make the broch accessible. It was feared that, unless the broch was fully recorded, and the surviving walls stabilised, the site would suffer a major structural failure. During the consolidation works on the stone structure, a full excavation of the interior of the broch was also carried out. Removing tonnes of rubble from the interior revealed a well-preserved sequence of floors below as they were left at the time of the fire.
