More model informationThis larger than life-size statue depicts the Emperor Claudius, who reigned over the Roman Empire between AD 41 and 54. He was born in Gaul in 10 BC as Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, and although born out of Rome, he was considered a Roman citizen through his parents and lineage.
This statue is one of a set of at least four marble sculptures found within the ruins of the Domvs Romana. At least two of these show members of Claudius’ family, and it is thus possible that all four formed a cycle of Imperial portraits. These include that of a young boy with a bulla around his neck, which probably portrays the young Nero, Claudius’ adopted son and successor in A.D. 54.
