Clay Figure, Tang Dynasty 3D Model
From the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco: “This tile comes from the facade of the Red Pagoda at Xiuding temple, located twenty-five miles from Anyang, in Henan province. This complex originated as a Chan Buddhist temple in the early sixth century. It was destroyed in the anti-Buddhist persecution of 576, but was reestablished during the Sui dynasty (581-618) to placate the ghosts of soldiers killed in battle along the Central Asian frontiers and to console their families. The pagoda tile combines with others to create the appearance of a Central Asian tent propped up by four pillarlike tent poles embellished with Islamic motifs.”
