The claymore is a large two-handed sword used primarily by Scottish Highlanders during the late medieval and early Renaissance periods, especially in the 15th to 17th centuries. The name “claymore” comes from the Gaelic claidheamh mòr, meaning “great sword.” The claymore is a massive sword with a broad, double-edged blade, often over 4 feet long. It features a distinctive crossguard with forward-sloping arms and quatrefoil (clover-like) designs at the ends.
The traditional two-handed claymore was known for its reach and powerful swings, ideal for open battlefield combat — especially when facing off against cavalry or tightly packed infantry. It’s a symbol of Scottish warrior culture and often associated with Highland clans.
