An ancient Egyptian coffin from the site of Beni Hassan. The coffin dates to the Middle Kingdom and is decorated in a typical Middle Kingdom style, with hieroglyphs featuring an offering formula and a pair of eyes painted on the side of the coffin.
This coffin was discovered by John Garstang in 1902 and was one of the first objects on display in the Institute of Archaeology in 1904. The owner of this coffin was a man called Userhat. The text upon the coffin tells us that he was a soldier.
Userhat was placed in an anthropoid (Human-shaped) coffin and then into this coffin. Userhat’s inner coffin is now at the Fitzilliam Museum in Cambridge (E.88.1903).
