COLMAP test: Edinburgh George Street excerpt3D Model
935 photographs were captured of Edinburgh’s George Street north side on 2018-10-06 with a Samsung S7. Method of capture: from opposite pavement, face target and take 180d of overlapping photos, move along 10m, repeat, etc.
These photos were then processed in COLMAP to produce a sparse (676K points) and then dense (6M points) cloud, this took 21.5 hours (feat ext 4m, feat match w/ VocabTree 32K 236m, sparse 328m, undist 15m, stereo max_image_size 1000 633m, fusion 74m). (System specs: i5-4590, GTX970, 32GB RAM).
6M point cloud in MeshLab:
In MeshLab, Screened Poisson Surface Reconstruction w/ recon depth of 15 was applied:
The model was split to make it more manageable. (Mesh shown here is westmost part of George Street’s north side, from Charlotte Square to Castle Street). Thereafter the mesh was processed further in MeshLab (select/delete edges longer than 0.02, Lap Smoo, remove isol wrt dia, manual selec/delet, Simple QEC Dec).
