Column Brick W. Finger Impression (VCU_3D_2813)3D ModelNoAI
This brick was used for one of the columns at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest and has impressions from the enslaved laborer who made it. The brick was 3D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3D scanner. Courtesy of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest.
According to Dr. Eric Proebsting, personal communication, August 23, 2019, “This was one of many column bricks made at Poplar Forest in 1808 with local clay by enslaved laborers (one of whom left their fingerprints on this particular brick) working under the direction of Jefferson’s brick mason Hugh Chisolm. This brick comes from the bottom of one of the Tuscan order columns that were created for both the north and south portico of the house. This brick is part of the column shaft as it transitions to the base, and the molding at the bottom of the brick is related to the cincture at the base of the column.”
