Comanche National Grassland, Colorado, United States
18th/19th century
Horses reshaped the West, bringing many groups southward to the southern Plains - where both horses and horse habitat were abundant. This incredible petroglyph comes from Comanche National Grassland - near Colorado’s southern border, in the heartland of comanchería, the vast territory occupied by the Comanche during the 18th and 19th centuries. The horse has been carved into the sandstone cliff face, while the rider and an encampment scene, are painted behind in charcoal. Using a color filter, some difficult-to-see features of the composition emerge.
