Jean-Henri Riesener, Commode, 1772-1773. Château de Chantilly (OA245).
This chest of drawers was initially designed in 1775 for the apartment of the intendant of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, Pierre-Elisabeth de Fontanieu, by one of the most prestigious cabinet maker during the reign of Louis XVI. It was then used as the furniture of Consul de Cambacérès in his Parisian hotel, and later became the property of King Louis-Philippe through inheritance. The Duc d’Aumale repurchased it in 1857. As her fellow cousin created by the same cabinet maker for the King’s bedroom in Versailles, it offers certain characteristic elements such as the central trapezoidal “ressaut”, and above all its marquetery, with an exceptional quality of execution.
