Jean-Henri Riesener, Commode, 1775. Château de Chantilly (OA246).
This chest of drawers is one of the most remarkable pieces of furniture from the Chantilly’s collection, not only due to its royal origin but also to its place within Riesner’s oeuvre. When he received this order, Reisener had just taken the position of purveyor of the Garde-Meuble, in succession of Joubert.
During ten years, he “ruled” over the production supplied to the Couronne and left a strong mark on the French furniture style from the last years of the 18th century. Acquired in 1857, the Duc d’Aumale had it placed in the bedroom of Monsieur le Prince upon his return from his exile.
