Common loon (OUVC 10719)Your model is disabled. For more details go to Edit properties3D Model
Here’s a skeletal study of the common loon (Gavia Immer) derived from a CT dataset that we uploaded to MorphoSource recently (http://bit.ly/2OUDt6K). You can freely download and 3D print a loon skeleton if you like! This beautiful specimen came to us as a natural casualty, donated by our friends at the Avian Conservation Center in SC. I thawed it just enough to get it into a credible swimming pose (it’s a foot-propelled diver) and then refroze it. I then took it to OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital for CT scanning. Check out the pile of gastroliths (stomach stones) in the belly.
