“In the depths of a mine, communication is king”, told me one of the former miners.
Indeed, communication was essential in the mines. The model represents a tool which was largely used in the mines of Limburg in the middle of XX century until 1970s, when the mines were shut down. In particular, this object belonged to Willem – Sofia mine in Kerkrade.
This communication tool consists of the red metal case and a metal tube with a wooden cork.
If a miner would want to send a message to his colleagues, he would put the piece of paper in the metal tube, close it with a wooden cork, and put it in the red metal case. Then he would pass it through the special tunnel in the mine.
The original can be found in the Dutch Mining Museum (Nederlands Mijnmuseum) in Heerlen (NL).
