The Comunn na Feinne Society was an important feature of Geelong’s social life. The oldest Scottish Society in Australia, it was formed in 1856 in foster the “Scottish spirit for games and culture” (Brownhill, 1955, p.260). In 1857 they held the first annual Geelong Highland Gathering which continued to the 1930s when attendances declined and the society folded. Revived in the 1950s, the Gathering continues today.
