From the 15th century on Coney Street (York) there was a Grand Coaching Inn known as ‘The George. The inn served both travellers and locals for hundreds of years, until the mid 19th century (1855) when it was sold and split into 6 lots. Leake and Thorp bought 5 of these and demolished the remains of the medieval inn.
This is believed to be, at least in part, the door to the George Inn which itslef may have come from another grand building in the medieval period. We say ‘in part’ as there are many indicators that the door has been stuck back together and had various additions to it over the centuries. The panelling, for example, is pieced onto older door slats.
The door was scanned with the kind permissions of York Museums Trust for the StreetLife York Project.
