This cross provides a vital glimpse into the multicultural world of Coptic Egypt. The designs, blending older motifs with Christian iconography, match exactly those on contemporary funeral stelae from the area around Thebes. It features a floral or solar center, and vine-like carvings on the arms, which would have held meaning for many different groups during this period of religious diversity. This limestone sculpture is believed made ca. 700 CE.
