A cast-brass sculpture of a standing Benin court official, modeled with enlarged, stylised facial features, almond-shaped eyes, and incised scarification marks. The figure wears a rounded cap, an intricately patterned tunic, and a wrap skirt decorated with geometric motifs. At the center of the chest hangs a prominent cross-shaped pendant on a beaded necklace, identifying the figure’s ceremonial status within the palace hierarchy. The hands are positioned to hold ritual or symbolic objects. Such figures were traditionally placed on royal ancestral altars, serving as perpetual attendants and affirming the authority and ritual order of the Benin monarchy.
