The gate was built between 1342 and 1370. It was a square structure with walls 12 metres wide and 2,5-3 metres deep. In the 14th century the Krakowska Gate was over 25 metres high. In 1555 it was renovated to include a barbican. At this time the Gate likely was expanded to include a lead-sheet dome. In 1575 the Gate burnt down, but was quickly rebuilt. At the start of the 17th century it included a square base and a domed octagonal upper level. In 1782 the building underwent major renovations.
