More model informationThis is a short section (15 mm) of a crinoid stem (or more correctly, ‘column’), which is normally the only part of crinoids to be preserved. The fossil itself is a replacement (or recrystallisation) of the stem, and therefore is a cast of the original. The stems were segmented, with this specimen made of five segments. The cross-sectional view also shows the classic radiating septa.
Crinoids (aka ‘sea lilies’) are filter feeders. The upper sections (‘cup’ or calyx) are delicate structures not preserved. Reprocessed model uploaded 2nd February 2021.
