From Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli, Italy.
Fine-grained white marble.
The fragmentary statue depicts the goddess Aphrodite in the act of bathing. Supposedly an ancient Roman copy of a Greek original, attributed to Doidalsas of Bithynia (3rd century BC).
According to the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme Museum, of all the copies of this type, the one shown here “is the most artistically succesful.”
From the Hadrianic Period (117-138 AD).
