More model information“Cruz Monumental de los Caídos” (Monumental Cross of the Fallen)
This monument is quite controversial. The general Francisco Franco won the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and imposed a dictatorship that lasted 36 years, until 1975. One of the earliest decisions that he made was to pay tribute to the casualities on the battlefield (only in his faction) by erecting monuments in memoriam of the fallen around the country. This Christian Cross is a good example of that characteristic fascist, Italian architecture style. After the restoration of democracy in the late 1970s, this monument has been stripped of its Francoist meaning.
