More model information

A cryptoendolithic community dominated by lichens is a unique ecosystem that lives inside rocks, particularly in the extreme environments of Antarctica. These microorganisms—mainly lichens, along with bacteria and algae—inhabit tiny spaces within the rock’s pores, where they are protected from intense cold, strong UV radiation, and drying winds. The lichens form symbiotic relationships between fungi and photosynthetic partners, allowing them to survive with minimal moisture and nutrients. Despite the harsh conditions, these hidden communities play an important role in slowly breaking down rocks and contributing to the formation of soil, making them essential pioneers of life in one of Earth’s most extreme habitats.

This model was realized by Glenda Cantale during the Universal Civil Service (SCU) at the Genoa University.
